2018 Training Walks

Which training walk is for you...

One of the best ways to get ready for your challenge, is by taking part in one or more of our organised training walks. Get the 'feel' for the challenge ahead and build up that base level of fitness!

Whether you're taking on a Quarter Challenge or going for the full 100km, there is a training walk suitable for you.

  • Led by experienced Action Challenge leaders 
  • Get advice on training, equipment and nutition
  • Meet fellow Challengers
  • Distances ranging from 10km to 40km 
  • Night Walks - perfect for those on the Full Challenge
  • Dates available from January to August

South Downs - Sat 24 March
      30km - Start & Finish - Eastbourne
     

The South Downs training walk will test your feet and legs whilst taking in some of the UK's finest coastal scenery - ideal for those taking on any of our 2018 Ultra Challenges. We will kick off the morning with a briefing by one of the team and you will get the opportunity to meet other challengers - swap stories, hints and tips and more before stretching the legs along the South Downs. We will also have a stop for lunch  on the 30km walk - before continuing on to Eastbourne.

  • 30km - £25 per person per walk

The Easter Walk - Sat 31 March
      25 km & 25 miles - Start & Finish Windsor
     

Why not join us for our first, and special, Easter Walk - not only will you get to test out your kit, fitness & feet but experience first hand what it feels like to take on a challenge before the big day! Setting off from Windsor along the River Thames on Easter Saturday and passing through beautiful scenery and countryside. Set yourself (and the family!) a goal this spring with either a 25 mile or 25 km challenge, and a big celebration finish and fun day!

Thames Night Walk - Sat 14/ Sun 15 Apr
      25 km - St Paul's to Richmond
      (Fully Booked)

If you are taking on a 100km challenge - the night stages of the route will be the most testing both mentally as well as physically. It is highly recommended that you practise the unique experience of donning your head torch after hours and walking through the night. Not only will you be testing your fitness, but also how your body copes with sleep deprevation and working when it really shouldnt be! Our night walks are the perfect opportunity to try out a night time training walk, fully supported by our team of leaders and fellow Ultra Challenge you will be able to swap training hints and tips. 

 

Our route will set out at midnight from Central London, after a welcome briefing by the team - we will turn the head torches on and take on a flat 25km route along the Thames Path passing by some famous London attractions, with a stop along the way before finishing in Richmond in time for the sunrise and a hot cup of tea! The route will mainly be on pavements, and some footpaths towards Putney into Richmond. 

 

Price: £25 per person

  • Time: Meet between 23-23.30, start midnight
  • Finish: Richmond Station estimated time 6.00-6.30am

Cotswolds Day Walk - Sat 19 May
     14 & 28 km - Start & Finish Stroud (Fully Booked)
     

This a training walk to test the legs - with some hilly ascents & descents, along footpaths and trails - an ideal walk for those taking on the South Coast, Jurassic or Cotswolds Challenge. The route loops from and back into Stroud, the 28km walk follows the Cotswold Way up to Painswick, where we stop for a half way break and back round via Bisley and Eastcombe. Those taking on the 14km will head towards Whitehill, with a steady ascent before heading back towards Stroud along the Cotswold Way. 

 

Price: 

  • 28km - £25 per person
  • 14km - £15 per person

  • Start & finish location: The Lord John Pub, 7 Russell St, Stroud GL5 3AA (2 minute walk from Stroud train station)
  • Start: Meet between 9.00-9.30, start 10.00
  • Finish (for both distances): 13.00-13.30 pm for the 14km, between 15.00 – 17.00 hrs for the 28km
  • Teas / coffees & biscuits at the finish

North Downs Day Walk - Sat 16 June
      25 km - Guildford to Dorking
     

A route selected to replicate some of the trails and climbs you will experience on any of the challenges . Setting out from Guildford, which has a direct trains from London, we head towards Westhumble 25km later. On route you will get to know our team and other challengers.

 Price: £25 per person per walk 

 

On the day info:

  • Meet: The Rodboro Pub (GU1 4SG) (2 minute walk from the train station) 
  • Start time: 10:00am after a briefing by experience leader & AC Team 
  • Half way stop - for lunch (bring your own)
  • Finish: The Stepping stone Pub (RH7 6BS) between 17:00 – 18:30 hrs
  • Getting away: The finish venue is a 10 min walk from Westhumble Train Station (trains back to London) 
  • Teas / coffees & biscuits at the start & finish

Surrey Night Walk - Sat 7/ Sun 8 July

Our route begins after a hot drink and briefing by the team, before we set out for 25km along the North Downs along trails and footpaths before we arrive at the finish in Dorking, ready for the sunrise and a hot cup of tea! 

 

On the day info:

  • Meet: Guildford (exact venue TBC) at 11:30pm
  • Start walk at approximately 12:00am (midnight)
  • Finish: Guildford (exact venue TBC), approximately 7am
  • Teas / coffees & biscuits at the finish
  • Bring with you!: Food, snacks & drinks
  • Getting away: Trains back to London from Guildford start at ~7am

South Downs Day Walk - Sat 14 July
      15 & 30 km - Southease to Eastbourne
     

The South Downs training walk will test your feet and legs whilst taking in some of the UK's finest coastal scenery - ideal for those taking on any of our 2018 Ultra Challenges. We will kick off the morning with a breifing by one of the team and you will get the opportunity to meet other challengers - swap stories, hints and tips and more before stretching the legs along the South Downs. For those taking on the 15km walk - we will be finishing around 1pm in Berwick, where we will also have a stop for lunch for those on the 30km walk - before continuing on to Eastbourne across the hilly ups and downs of the Seven Sisters.

  • Start: 10:00am
  • 15km finish: Berwick Train Station approx. 1pm (trains back to Southease ~50mins/ London 2 hours)
  • 30km finish: Bibendum Pub & Restaurant, Eastbourne, approx. 5-6pm
  • Teas / coffees & biscuits at the finish
  • Don't forget to bring: Lunch, snacks, water/drinks

Thames Day Walk - Sat 4 Aug
      12 & 25 km - Blackfriars to Putney or Richmond
     

25km of the Thames Path Trail, setting out from Blackfriars, Central London after a briefing from the team before heading for Richmond in West London along the Thames Path. This is an ideal training walk for anyone taking on 25, 50 or 100km along the Thames Path - giving you opportunity to test your kit, and shoes! Many people underestimate the impact the flat terrain of the Thames Path will have on their feet, legs and back - so by joining us not only will you get to meet our team and experts but fellow Ultra Challengers too!

  • Start: walk will begin at 10:00am
  • Finish in Putney (14km) ~1pm
