Whether you are a seasoned Ultra Challenger looking for new adventure, or dreaming of your first endurance challenge, now is the perfect time to plan your 2026 Challenge Calendar! Taking on an Ultra Challenge becomes about so much more than event day itself. Use this guide to help you out!
Step 1: What is Your Goal?
Every plan needs a great goal, but it doesn’t have to be overly serious or even a numerical value! Many Ultra Challengers will be looking to complete a specific distance or maintain a pace, but there are countless goals you could set.
Think about a goal to have as much fun as possible, or introduce Ultra Challenge to new people, or maybe travel to new locations.
Goals can also manifest in training itself – try and be as consistent as possible, grow your confidence on the trails, or share your experiences with others. As long as you finish strong with a smile, you’ve done amazing!
Step 2: Map Your Timeline
Once you’ve got your main goal in mind, it’s time to look at the bigger picture. What else do you have going on in 2026? Of course, things come up and being flexible with training is important, but having a basic structure is a great starting point to keep you on track for 2026.
Training should fit around the other commitments in your life, whether they relate to family, work, or other goals you might have.
Choose a date for your Ultra Challenge that realistically works, and will give you sufficient time to train. This will set you up for enjoyment in the training process and Challenge itself, rather than stress. A clear timeline helps build excitement and momentum, not add pressure!

Step 3: Add Practice Events
No matter the distance you are taking on, training is about more than just logging miles. You’ll need to make sure you’ve trialled your clothing choices, nutrition, and supporting kit.
Shorter events are a great way to test your plan for the main event! If your headline goal is a 100km, a 50km earlier in the year can be a perfect dress rehearsal. If a 50km is your focus, a 25km can help you feel prepared when the big day comes around.
Step 4: Mix Challenge & Fun
Ultra Challenges are meant to be enjoyed – while it is great to push yourself, it is just as important to choose events that genuinely excite you!
Pick a couple of low intensity events that add real fun into your calendar. This might mean a dream location that you have always wanted to explore, a charity fundraiser with friends, or a route that you have absolutely loved and want to experience again.
A balanced calendar keeps motivation high. Mixing in tougher goals with events for pure enjoyment helps make your calendar truly rewarding and exciting from start to finish.
Step 5: Commit To It
Planning can only take you so far. Once your dates are in the diary it’s time to commit! Each walk, jog, or run becomes part of a bigger journey even on the days when motivation might dip.
Commitment doesn’t mean perfection, you should aim to show up as best as you can given everything else happening in your life. Enjoy the process and remember why you signed up in the first place. It is a sense of purpose that turns a good Ultra Challenge experience into a great one!
